I get asked a lot why I wear makeup, often in a negative way, like “Why do you bother?” “I don’t know why you feel you need to,” or “How do you find the time?” so today I thought I’d set the record straight.
I thought the best way to start would be to take the questions from the ‘Why Do You Wear Makeup?” tag that often does the rounds on YouTube and the blogosphere. So without further ado, here is Why I Wear Makeup…
1. When did you begin wearing makeup?
I couldn’t put an exact age on it, but probably in my very early teens. My mum being the awesome woman she is, didn’t put an age limit on me wearing makeup, and I remember her buying me a couple of items from the local pharmacy when I was around ten. I had spots you see, not acne, but spots, and I really wasn’t happy about this! So I remember the first items me begging for were foundations and concealers.
I built up my collection between the ages of ten and sixteen by saving my pocket money, begging mum for things from the Avon catalogue, and even sneaking items out of her makeup bag.
Thankfully the question “Where do you get your love of beauty from?” isn’t on this tag, as I honestly don’t know. My mum, although having a makeup bag, hasn’t worn makeup for years. The only other woman in my life that I might have got it from would be my nan. She is, what I would call, a very ‘put-together’ woman. She has always taken pride in her appearance, and maybe it was her dressing table of treasures that spurred on my love for the finer things in life!
2. How do I feel without makeup?
For a very long time, I didn’t feel comfortable going out into the big wide world without makeup. In fact, up until the age of 20 you wouldn’t catch me outside without it on!
Now it’s a different story. I’ve come to the conclusion that if I look after my skin, I will always look good with or without makeup – that might sound big headed, but that’s not really how I mean it.
It’s just now I feel happy, confident, and at ease with my skin. Sure I wish I didn’t have the odd blemish, or that my eyelashes would curl naturally, but who (honestly) cares.
Going to uni was the kicker for me, it taught me to love me. That happens, I guess, from taking care of yourself, achieving things that had nothing to do with your looks and finding someone who loves me (I mean that guy loves the bones of me!)
3. What do I like about makeup?
I like being able to look different. Thats obvious, but with those different looks comes different feelings. I like being able to smoke my eyeshadow out, and that make me feel sexy. I like slapping on some concealer on a spot, and feeling better because someone would notice my eyes before the red thing on my chin. I like being able to leave a lipstick kiss on a mirror, or a note – theres something romantic about that.
4. My 3 Holy Grail items
This was a tough one for me, but if I had to choose:
Filling in my brows with this product means I can guarantee they will come out perfectly.
Mascara is a must for me, it is the thing that gives me the most confidence makeup wise. This mascara gives my lashes length and volume, whilst giving them the blackest-black coat.
This is probably my favourite foundation of all time, buildable, luminous, and perfecting.
P.S: Do lash curlers count? They aren’t actually makeup, rather a tool. But hey, I’m cheating because I couldn’t go without my Shu Uemura eyelash curlers!
So if I’m right, I’m supposed to tag someone at this point to also answer the questions. But…I’m tagging you!
If you wear makeup, I’d love to know why, answer in the comments below, you don’t have to answer all the questions, but leave your thoughts, I’d love to know!

I absolutely love this post and I’ve been thinking of doing a similar one my myself so these questions are a really helpful guide :) I hate how much judgement we get for wearing makeup but the blogging world has given me so much more confidence and reassurance about it.

I’m really glad you enjoyed the post :) If you do something similar on your blog send me a link on Twitter @madefrombeauty_ so I can find it!
It seems so silly that as women we are forced to often feel inadequate if we don’t look a certain way, then victimised if we apply makeup or enjoy beauty – just wrong! But the blogging community is so supportive and accepting, so nice to meet people with similar interests!
Thank you for commenting! :)

Nice post! I love wearing make-up as it makes me feel more confident within myself, I will happily leave my house make-up free but adding a bit of slap to cover those blemishes, some mascara to lengthen the lashes and a nice bold lip makes me feel quite sassy haha! x

This was a really interesting read, I might have a go at the tag myself! I love that you feel comfortable in your skin and look after it. I mainly wear make up because it’s fun, but recently I’ve been suffering from breakouts so I use it to conceal them xx

The best thing I ever done was starting to look after my skin!
Makeup is fun, I completely get what you mean!
We all get breakouts from time to time, nice to know makeups on hand if we want it!

I wear makeup because I like the way it looks. I have fun with colors and changing the shape of my eyes and colors of my lips. It’s a time every day where I get to be artistic and creative and I really enjoy that. I started wearing makeup around age 12 or 13 but I had no idea what I was doing. Without makeup, I feel confident and often on the weekend I don’t wear any at all.
Holy grails? Nars Radiant Concealer, Make Up For Ever HD Foundation, MAC Creme Cup lipstick
Also, I haven’t had anyone comment about why I wear makeup or try to make me feel guilty for wearing it but I am definitely seeing that more frequently in blogs and I’m just not sure why all of the sudden there’s this trend to make people feel shitty about wanting to wear make up. Maybe we should make them feel shitty for not wanting to wear make up. HA!
I always find posts where you get to understand the blogger my favourite ones to read and I loved reading this. I think “I like being able to look different” really sums it up for. It’s so great that we don’t have to look exactly the same every day and is also the reason I love fashion so much – you can use it to reinvent yourself every morning if you wish.
