Back in the 90s I’d make hair masks out of olive oil, honey and other sticky stuff with my friends. We’d rub the oil into the lengths of our hair pop on a towel and bake our virgin hair like that for hours whilst reading Smash Hits and painting our nails. When we’d wash out hair and dry it everything would be silky, soft and nourished. So oils are something I’ve used in my beauty routine for many, many years.
In the past couple of years though, olive oil had become the less glamorous cousin of the highly sought after, expensive, coconut oil. With so many health benefits linked to the oil (mainly due to its high lauric and fatty acid make up) many have turned to it as a kind of wonder, do all product. Just like olive oil, you can cook with it, use it on hair skin and nails, you can even use it to remove your makeup in a pinch.
I’m not going to list all the things you can do with coconut oil, there’s lots of ideas here, but I’m going to just share if I think it’s worth the hype.
When Vita Coco asked me if I’d like to try their oil I thought it would be a great way to see what all the fuss was about. The brand thoughtfully set me lots of information about their oil, and two jars.
First of all I’ve been steadily using up the smaller pot of oil in my beauty stash. As you can see, coconut oil is a solid when as room temperature, it’s only when heated slightly that it becomes the thin, easily manageable oil.
I like dipping into this pot every now and then to rub a little oil on to my cuticles, or on the tips of my hair. I’ve definitely seen an improvement just adding these little extra beauty steps into my daily routine. It’s also nice to be popping something on or through the hair that you know has no nasties in, just pure moisturising, nourishing goodness.
On the cooking front, I’m saving this large jar for this kitchen. I’m still yet to find a recipe that calls for coconut oil that I really want to try, so please if you have any suggestions let me know in the comments.
I’ve really enjoyed mixing coconut oil into my beauty routine and it’s definitely something I’d repurchase. What’s your favourite use for coconut oil? Or are you still yet to add an oil to your beauty stash? Let me know in the comments below.

I have been loving coconut oil for the past year or so. I love using it in thai curries because it works perfectly with the flavours and beauty wise, I mostly love to use it as an overnight hair mask (for my dry ends) x

Oh I’ll have to try it in a curry, such a great idea! And the hair mask idea, I’ll have to give that a whirl!
