I’ve been working hard on my highlighting game recently. I am intoxicated with their brightening, glowing, sheen-y ways. Over the last month I’ve dipped into my highlighting collection more times than I care to count after December’s long nights. That’s the thing with a good highlighter, no matter how naff you and your skin are because of a late night or two, it always manages to perk you up.
Here’s a little look at three of my favourite glow-giving-wonders of the moment:
First up has to be the Mary Lou Manizer Luminizer from theBalm. This warm, golden powder houses silver and gold shimmers for a truly mega highlight. Now shimmer may be the wrong word, well sort of, I’d say the powder can come off shimmery if used heavily during the day. Just a few taps of your brush (I use my Real Techniques Duo Fibre Contour Brush) are all you need for a subtle daytime glow, but build this one up and you’re talking full on shimmer. Sometimes I quite like a shimmer, more for the odd night out or if I know I’m being photographed. That’s one of the best things about this product, it works great for day and night.
Next up is the setting-and-highlighting powder. If you didn’t see my Powders: The Best Of The Best post then you will need to check it out to get why I like this product. I brought the Bourjois Poudre De Riz De Java powder after lusting after the beautiful packaging, and hearing it compared to the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders. They are both setting powders with highlighting properties, but that is where the similarities end. The Hourglass powder I actually do use all over as a setting powder (to find out why you’ll have to read the blog post) whereas this one I do not. I mainly use the Java Powder when my skin is working the glow from my foundation and I want to set the high points of my face with something that will keep that glow all day. It isn’t a very refined highlight, actually adding glitter to the face, but done softly I actually really like this dainty little pot.
I also find myself using a cream highlighter on an almost daily basis. One like the No7 Instant Radiance Highlighter gives a real glow from within appearance to the skin. I love the champagne shade of this twist up stick. I find that if I apply it straight from the bullet it can move my makeup underneath so I use it on my fingers, tapping it onto my cheekbones, cupid’s bow and the inner corners of the eyes. Oh and one last thing, at £9.95, this comes in at a very well priced Benefit Watt’s Up! dupe.
