Could these new nail polishes be the answer to our prayers? Do they deliver on their promise of at home gel look nails?
The new Barry M Sunset Daylight Curing Nail Paints are specially formulated to cure into a hard set, high shine, pretty manicure. Barry M say the polish does all this using UV rays to cure the colour for a long wearing, gel type finish. So let’s get through all the fluff, I tried four of the colours out and the top coat to see how the system faired.
I was a little disappointed with the formula as a whole. After using and loving Barry M’s Gelly High Shine Nail Paints in the past, I thought the Sunset Nail Paints would go on much the same. I’m sorry to report this isn’t the case. I found the four colours I tried to apply a little patchy. It also took three to four coats to build up to an opaque finish. And honestly, who has time for four coats of polish, including the top coat?
I found the shades For The Stars (a beautiful pink coral) and Drive Me Navy (a straight up navy) to be the worst to apply. Barry M recommend that you apply thin layers of the product, but I found that For The Stars was pretty thick and so thin layers were hard to do.
I was really excited to see a nude in the collection, Like A Nude, because it would look amazing with a tan. However I kind of found that this colour was very thin and I needed four coats of colour for it to be as opaque as I would like.
I would say though that the shades are truly gorgeous! The collection is very summer themed, as you would expect from a product called Sunset.
So the shades I picked up were (from left to right) The Topcoat, For The Stars, Make Me Teal, Like A Nude, and Drive Me Navy.
My favourite shade to apply would be Make Me Teal, a bright teal colour that makes the hands look healthy and tanned.
There is one star of the show though! The Sunset Daylight Curing Topcoat! It really makes the nails look thick, as if you had a gel manicure. It is really high shine, and drys quickly, something that I think the colour polishes struggle with. I still haven’t tried this top coat with another normal nail polish (something Barry M advise against) so I’ll keep you updated with that one. At the moment, depending on how this performs with other nail varnishes, this product is really challenging my beloved Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.
There’s also another big plus side to these; their staying power! I had a mixture of all the shades on my nails for five days straight without any signs of chipping or flaking. The topcoat kept my nails shiny and well polished, and I still love the shades despite the work needed with some of them.
So here’s the thing you’ve all been waiting for: do you need to use them in the sunlight? Well…yes and no.
I have used the polishes twice, only by a sunny window in the middle of the day, and once at night under artificial light. I’m happy to say it’s not a complete gimmick! When I used the nails varnishes in the sun they definitely dried faster, but with a little bit more time I got the same results when using them at night.
If you’re looking for some new summertime polishes then Barry M have defiantly offered up some lovely shades. I would completely recommend the shade Make Me Teal, as well as the top coat. I’ve seen some reviews for other beauty bloggers raving about other shades, so if you’re up for trying something new I say give them a go!
With a great staying power and shades that really pop, the Barry M Sunset Daylight Curing Nail Paints are something you might want to check out.
