I really should stop buying things without trying them first. Really!
Today I have another disappointing drugstore product to share with you today and honestly, I’m gutted. When I picked these shadows up I was really looking forward to doing a blog post showing you all the exciting looks you could create with these products, but…I’m not going to even bother!
When I saw the Maybelline Color Show Mono Eyeshadows I didn’t hold back and picked up three shades. Two shimmer and one matte, all in wearable shades that could have looked amazing on the lids.
First things first, does anyone even remember these products coming out? I know I don’t, to be honest I am surprised that these went completely under my radar.
The first shade I was immediately drawn to was Copper Fizz. I always like to check out rose gold/copper shades, I think they’re beautiful naturals that are bit different. Unfortunately Copper Fizz was more of a pink with a hint of orange rather than a really interesting shade. I was also really disappointed to find large chunks of gold glitter in the shadow, making it look a little too in your face for day to day wear.
So the next shade I picked up was Lustrous Beige. Again I was drawn to this shade because it’s just the sort of bronzy shade I would wear regularly. But again, I was disappointed to find chunky glitter and a poor colour pay off.
I then thought I’d try out a matte shade from the collection and so I chose Chic Taupe, thinking it would be good to pop into the crease. I was almost stunned to find so little colour pay off. The pigmentation of all the shadows weren’t great, but it was this shade which was honestly just a waste of money. For the swatch photo (where Chic Taupe is the shade on the right) I had to really build it up again and again to be able to photograph the shade. The taupe wasn’t really one I would like to rock on an everyday basis anyway, a bit too purple-grey for my taste, but still disappointing.
The worst thing about all these shadows though was the wear time. They have to be one of the fastest fading products I’ve used in a long time. Shadows fading isn’t something I have an issue with, I’m not someone who has to wear an eyeshadow primer and I can normally slap on a powder and go. After only two hours the intensity of the shadows, which wasn’t all that to begin with anyway, had completely gone and I was hard pushed to see the pigment at all.
The shadows are swatched above from left to right: Copper Fizz, Lustrous Beige and Chic Taupe.
I’d say if you were after some really affordable shadows with great pay off and lasting power then check out this blog post. But I’d say save your money with this one!
Have you tried out any of these shadows? Maybe it was just me, but maybe you had a better way of using them? Let me know below!
Sam

I try to avoid drugstore makeup brands. They tend not go well for me.
