Affordable makeup up is pretty easy to come by on the British highstreet, but I think most people would agree, we aren’t falling over really really cheap makeup in most stores. However, Superdrug is where it is at if you are a little strap for cash!
Boots is my favourite store on the highstreet for my makeup and beauty bits, mainly for their selection of highend brands, and until recently Superdrug just hadn’t tempted me in. But, with a recent move, Superdrug is now just outside my door and so I have been finding myself popping in there more and more. During one of my most recent explorations into Superdrug I came across the brand Makeup Revolution. I was blown away by the price of the products, along the same vain at MUA the popular cheap as chips brand that came to the UK a while ago, Makeup Revolution has lipsticks starting at £1.00 and palettes for £4.00.
So the first thing I wanted to check out was their single eye shadows, for only £1.00 I thought they would be worth a shot! I picked up the shades Delicious, Mmmm, Smooth As and Cappuccino. All natural, brown shades and something that I could see myself using everyday. The majority of the shades I brought were matte, apart from Cappuccino because I was really interested in how there matte shades would apply. I have to say, for £1.00, I am pretty impressed with the matte shadows. They apply well, with quiet a light pigmentation, but are buildable or can be used with a damp brush to give you a bigger hit of colour. The shimmery shadow, Cappuccino, is a beautiful gold that can be used as an everyday wash of colour, and it can also be built up to create a warm, striking night time look.
So everything was going pretty well with Makeup Revolution, then I picked up the Vivid Baked Blush in Hard Day. In the packaging, this looks like a mauve pink swirled with a baby pink shimmer. I thought this would be great to add a glow and barely-there colour when I’m wearing a dark pink – wrong. Completely wrong! It actually comes out like a warm pink, but so shimmery it’s unwearable for me. I have tried to use it as a highlighter, but then the colour makes me look like I’ve got pink cheekbones. As a blush it just looks like a badly applied pink eye shadow, I just can’t make it work for me, so I think I’ll pass on this!
The next item I picked up was their Redemption eye shadow Palette in Iconic 3. This palette contains twelve shades for £4.00! Can you believe it? I must say these shadows aren’t the best quality out there, but what do you expect for £4.00? I have the feeling that these shadows are harder and more dense than the single shadows, so I find that they are a little harder to work with.
Then I picked up two of the Awesome Metals Foil Finish eye shadows. The shades I have are Black Diamond (boxed) and Rose Gold, which I wore recently in my MadeFromBeauty is One Month Old post. These little shadow and liquid mixing-thingy are a dupe for the Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow’s. You get with both products a little bottle of clear liquid which you mix with the shadow on the included metal plate. The finished result gives you a real foiled effect on your eyes, almost as if you had applied glittery gold leaf to your eyes. I must say with the Awesome Metals Foil Finish eye shadows you do get quite a lot of fall down, so it might be good to apply these before your base makeup.
I also brought one of their Matte Lipsticks in the shade Fusion. This is another miss item. I was really not happy with this lipstick, it applies very unevenly and with little colour pay off. Sorry Makeup Revolution, but probably the worse product I tried. The colour Fusion is a deep berry tone, so a more nude colour might work better, and for £1.00 I think I might pick one up soon to give it another go.
Finally, the last product I picked up was their Amazing Eyeliner in Black. Now Makeup Revolution were very confident when they named this product, and for good reason. This liner really is amazing for £1.50. I would say that if you’re a newbie to winged liner, give this a try! The applicator is unlike any other I have tried from the highstreet, it is a small, sharply pointed, rubber nib with a fine point. The liner it’s self is matte back and pretty pigmented, it might not be the best on the market, but considering the price, it is definitely the best I have tried for under £5.00!
So a bit of hit and miss in Makeup Revolution range, but I am so glad I tried out the products. I have really found some gems, like the single shadows and liner that have entered my daily makeup rotation.
So have you tired anything from Makeup Revolution? If so, what else do you think I should try?
