As a makeup lover hoarder I am fortunate enough to have my pick from a wide variety of foundations every morning. I am not the type of makeup wearer to simply stick to my favourite product for weeks on end, I’m fickle like that!
My preference for a more dewy, glowing base has, on many occasions, left me with a bit of dilemma on a Monday morning…
The issue I mainly have is that dewy foundations just do not last. I’m sorry, no matter the claim on the pretty glass bottle, they just don’t. Foundations with a bit of glow can last, given the right primer to work with, a slight setting with powder and sometimes, if you are lucky, you can get a good six hour wear time.
This is all well and good, but my normal working day means I am out of the house from anywhere between 7 and 10 hours a day, and sometimes a bit of careful powder placement just wont cut it.
So this is where I propose mixing it up a bit. Literally. Mixing foundations to get what you need out of it.
I am sorry to say that I am putting emphasis on need here. As soon as you start mixing in longer wearing foundations to the most beloved dewy formulas, they just will not have quite the same lit-from-within finish as before.
But don’t be deflated, you can still get some gorgeous finishes out of mixing your foundations. On of my favourite combinations of late is one large pump of the L’Oréal Paris True Match Foundation mixed with a small pump of the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation. It creates a light as air feeling, no heavy, clogged pore feeling here, that seamlessly melts into the skin. I find that neither of these foundations sit on top of the skin, but I sometimes find the L’Oreal True Match a little cakey looking if I apply powder. And Monday to Friday I am an all over, light powder wearer. I find that a light touch of powder all over is all that’s really needed for the working week. This combination manages to just look like my skin, but better, concealing any of my redness and smoothing over any blemishes I may have.
Or if I’m feeling fancy, the YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation, how I love the finish of this foundation, mixed with a small amount of the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation makes for a great long lasting combination. This is my Friday foundation. Is that sad, having a Friday foundation? There is method on my madness though, when I want to go out after work on a Friday I can guarantee that at the bare minimum, my base will still be intact. The Luminous Silk is also a great foundation for layering so if I feel the need for extra coverage come 17.30, I can slap it on, straight on top. Together they make a very perfected, flawless Friday base.
If I’m feeling wild on a Friday morning I might also hit my face with a few mists of the Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray as well. But I have to be feeling wild…
Now I know, I know, a primer really would help the longevity of my makeup. But I honestly haven’t found one that I enjoy using, one that makes a huge difference or one that I can really be bothered to paste on before my foundation, which I know sounds lazy; but try it, see how you feel at 6 in the morning…
Tell me about your favourite foundation combinations, am I missing a trick somewhere? I have heard of lots of people mixing foundations to get their right shade match, but to alter the finish of your favourite foundation? Is that something you guys do?
